Jazz at Drew Medical University

Los Angeles California

Growing up in Southern California, I hear of the Trojans or the Bruins when universities are mentioned. I am not a fan of sports, but i enjoy watching sports.  However,  i couldn't tell you who won what and when. Many of us can associate schools with their sports. Some schools are known for the academic program, campus, or even the student body.  Drew Medical University have one special event, and it is not football, basketball, hockey, or water polo, nor is it a sport.  Drew University got soul and music, they have Jazz.  The 17th annual Jazz at Drew has been the university's  tradition for almost 2 decades.  This event brings out jazz musicians from the past, the current, and some hot new bands of the future.  It was a treat to hear the legendary performance of Curtis Mayfair performed by an orchestra. But thats not jazz, its more like R&B, well thats something definitely debatable.

Drew Medical University, located about 20 minutes south of down town Los Angeles has been nationally recognize for its medical research. The university sponsored a health fair that screened for cholesterol, blood pressure, AIDS (new technology involving a mouth swab), Asthma and prevention.

Vital spring was on campus to give attendees nutritional ideas and information about Chinese herbs and their effects on the health.  There were many myths and truth that needed  to be adressed.  Some of the issues includes the public being able to purchase herbs from any herbalist in America.  It was almost impossible to find Chinese herbal supplement in their local stores.

We were serving our Ginseng/Goji tea, and had a giant Ginseng root in a bottle soaked in a special rice wine. An x-ray tech student came up to us and asked us what ginseng was, she noticed that there are more more energy drinks with ginseng than ever. What a coincidence, Oriental medical practioner has been using such herb for thousands of years for treating weakness and fatigue. Now energy drinks use them in an un-regulated manner, for energy. “What is the difference between red Ginseng and regular Ginseng”, said Marcus Williams, a 55 year old school teacher. Red has a tendency of more heat than the regular color herb. Heat is not a physical description of the plant, more of its energy value. Green color tend to be more cooling, and usually have properties to calm the heat in red herbs.

This is a 2 day event, with back to back good music and definitely good people. The food was authentic southern, fried catfish, bbq ribs, pecan pie, and of course good old fashion strawberry lemonade. Next year, just when summer is almost over, when you need to find a little getaway, you can relax to Jazz and get good health advice.
